Cadillac Parking Structure After the Northridge Earthquake of January, 1994, the Cadillac Parking Structure at Kaiser Permanentes West Los Angeles Medical Center was "red tagged". Before use of the 5 story, 333,866 square foot, 1060 car parking structure could resume, extensive repairs were necessary. The project included adding piles, replacement and enlargement of pilecaps, adding shearwalls, wrapping columns, epoxy injection, repair of post-tensioning and various architectural upgrades. Intelisyn provided both preconstruction and construction services, and as with many other earthquake related projects, cost control was in accordance with FEMA / OES guidelines, ensuring proper reimbursement from the agencies. This project provided several unique challenges to the project team, such as the immediate shortage of demolition and heavy equipment after the earthquake. Anticipating this, the project team developed alternate "fall back" options to exercise as equipment availability changed. As well, the project was the basis for a value engineering study that reviewed steel vs. fiberglass wrap for strengthening of existing columns. |
